Nausea Remedies During Pregnancy: Vomiting Relief For Pregnant Women
Nausea and vomiting are common during the first three months of pregnancy, but it can also extend up to fifth moth.
- Usually termed as ‘morning sickness’, the condition is often noticed when getting up from bed.
- Some women will experience only a mild amount of nausea and no vomiting whereas some will throw up just once a day.
- Others will have nausea and vomiting throughout the day.
Causes of Nausea and Vomiting In Pregnant Women
- The exact cause of nausea and vomiting is not known.
- Certain hormone, mainly the Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH), has been pinpointed as one of the main causes of morning sickness and other early pregnancy symptoms.
- Other hormones may also be at play.
Dangers Of Nausea and Vomiting In Pregnancy
- The main concern with excessive nausea and vomiting in pregnant women is dehydration.
- This is dangerous because it has been known to cause problems like:
o Spontaneous abortion
o Low birth weight in babies
- Some signs of dehydration too look out for include:
o Dizziness
o Thirst
o Decreased amount of urine
o Dark colored urine with strong odor
- Dehydration can occur in women who vomit heavily when they are pregnant and those who do not drink enough or cannot keep down enough water.
Nausea Relief For Pregnancy
Some tips to help relieve or prevent nausea and vomiting include:
- Be Slow to Get Out of Bed
o A pregnant woman should take her time getting out of bed.
o Lie awake for a few minutes.
o Gradually move to a sitting position – stay this way for another few minutes.
o Move to the edge of the bed and dangle the legs off of it – do it for 5 minutes or so.
o Stand up slowly, hold on to support if necessary – Do this for few minutes.
o Move around, slowly at first.
- Dry Crackers or Dry Toast
o The best friends or a woman with morning sickness.
o While sitting in bed after waking up, eat some dry crackers and room temperature water.
o The dry crackers are going to help soothe the stomach and help to relieve any queasiness.
o If no soda crackers are available, plain dry toast may be substituted.
o Dry toast and crackers may be eaten throughout the day if the nausea persists.
- Ginger and other herbal teas
o Different herbal teas work differently for different women.
o Test out what teas work to calm stomach queasiness.
o Ginger is a good bet, be sure to choose fresh ginger when making tea.
o Honey can be added for some sweetness.
o Avoid minty teas as mint can relax the sphincters of the stomach.
- Avoiding nausea triggers is also a good idea.
- Medical attention may be necessary for cases of severe nausea and vomiting. This is done to prevent dehydration.
