Heartburn During Pregnancy: Remedies for Heartburn in Pregnant Women

Heartburn is a very common complaint with women who are in their third trimesters. Natural remedies are often preferred as some drugs are not good for an expectant mother.

  • Heartburn in pregnancy is mainly due to the upward motion of the fetus as it grows
  • This results in pressure on the stomach, which gets compressed
  • The acid in the stomach leaks out from the esophagus causing the burning sensation associated with heartburn
  • The condition can be very painful and it can make it difficult to get some rest
  • It can also last for hours.

Symptoms of Heartburn In Pregnant Women

  • Burning pain in the chest
  • Burping up sour and acidic liquid – stomach acid
  • Bad breath
  • Bloated feeling
  • Feeling full immediately after eating
  • Nausea

What Heartburn Treatments are Not Recommended?

  • Most heartburn remedies available from the drugstore are not recommended for pregnant women.
  • Some drugs to avoid are those that contain:

o    Aluminum

o    Sodium: This also means that a solution of baking soda and water is not an ideal heartburn remedy for a pregnant mother.

o    Aspirin: Some antacid combination contain aspirin and some pregnant women have been advised to avoid this medication.

Treatment for Heartburn During Pregnancy

Luckily, even without the help of some conventional antacids, there are number of natural remedies for pregnancy heartburn, they include:

  • Papaya or Papaya Enzyme:

o    This fruit should be taken fresh as it contains an enzyme that aids in digestion

o    Papaya should be taken after meals, especially fatty or high protein and high volume meals

o    When the fresh fruit is not available, enzyme tablets are available, these are made up of the enzymes found on the skin of the papaya

o    It is important to choose an all natural product and to take it as recommended by the health care provider

  • Yogurt:

o    Yogurt can help in digestion

o    Choose plain unsweetened yogurt

o    Some women have reported that different brands have differing effects so it is important to test out before giving up on yogurt

  • Natural Teas:

o    Some teas that work for indigestion include:

  • Fresh Ginger Tea
  • Fennel Seed Tea
  • Anise Tea

o    These teas can be prepared by steeping the herbs in some hot water for a few minutes before drinking

  • Chewing Bubblegum:

o    This produces a lot of saliva, which can aid in digestion

o    Avoid minty gum as it can further aggravate the hyperacidity

o    Chewing raw sweet almond can help too.

Natural Home Remedies for Heartburn In Pregnancy

  • Eat slowly: Eating too fast can sometimes lead to indigestion
  • Eat smaller meals at closer intervals: This helps reduce the strain on the stomach
  • Exercise: Walking around a bit can help to relieve the condition
  • Do not drink water during meals, drink afterward. Although, drinking 8 or more than eight oz glasses of water a day is still important
  • Don’t lie down immediately after eating, give the body time to digest the food, walk around a bit
  • Chew food thoroughly
  • Avoid high fat and high meat protein foods
  • Avoid sugary and acidic drinks
