Causes Of Frequent Urination In Pregnancy

Causes of frequent urination can be pathological or physiological. Frequency of urination is common physiological phenomenon during pregnancy. Almost majority of women may feel increased urge to pass urine during pregnancy as a result of several hormonal changes that occur during this period.

  • During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause increased circulation of blood in the body. The blood has to pass through kidney for filtration thus it fills the bladder more often and quickly. The urge to pass urine is experienced more during first and the last trimester. During the last trimester it is partly because of the pressure put on bladder and urethra by the enlarged uterus.
  • The pregnant woman may have sleepless nights as she may have to make frequent trips to the toilet. This may happen because while lying, the blood flow from the leg adds up in circulation increasing the filtration rate in kidney and proportionately increase of fluid in the bladder.
  • Frequency of urine increases if the pregnant woman is diabetic.
  • Urinary tract infection during pregnancy can also result in increased frequency of urine. However, there are other associated symptoms such as burning and pain while passing urine, or an urge to pass urine with only few droplets being passed out.

How to rule out infection as the cause of frequent urination during pregnancy?

  • Urine examination is necessary to rule out urinary tract infection. The test shows plenty of pus cells in urine. Sometimes it may also detect presence of bacteria in urine. Collect a fresh morning sample of urine in a clean jar or a bottle. Send it for examination in a pathological laboratory. The test may indicate if there is an infection in urinary tract.
