Is Dried Figs During Pregnancy Good for Growing Fetus and Mother?

Figs have been revered as a cultivated fruit since the ancient times, dating from 5,000 BC. The fruit is a supposed aphrodisiac, and is thus regarded as a symbol for fertility. The whole fruit is said to look like the male genitalia, and when split into two, figs are claimed to resemble the female genitalia. Ancient folklore states that the natural latex or sap that comes from a cut steam can treat problems of infertility, and help women experience seamless lactation. The folklore, however, seems to hold some truth.

Is Dried Fig Good for Pregnancy?

The fruit is considered a nutritional powerhouse, especially during pregnancy.

  • Among all common vegetables or fruits, figs, whether fresh or dry have the highest amounts of minerals. Figs have high amounts of nutrients essential for pregnancy, including zinc, potassium, iron, and calcium. These minerals are similar to the nutrients found in human breast milk.
  • The potassium contained in figs may help normalize blood pressure levels. These can be consumed to prevent preeclampsia, characterized by edema and hypertension.
  • Among all the fruits, figs contain the highest amount of fiber, making it an excellent solution for constipation, which is commonly experienced during pregnancy. Also, pregnant women have slowed metabolism and digestion. Figs have a proteolytic enzyme that helps pace these processes.
  • It is highly typical for pregnant women to develop intense cravings; however, these may prove unhealthy when the cravings involve sweets, processed, and junk foods. Figs have high alkaline content, which are proven to curb unnecessary cravings.
  • Morning sickness may be a common problem during the first trimester, but pregnant women may alleviate the problem with the help of the vitamin B6 found in figs.
  • Women may prevent the development of gestational diabetes by ingesting figs, as these can eliminate the need for the hormone insulin in most diabetic patients.
    Ingestion can help normalize levels of blood sugar, and relieve symptoms related to hyperglycemia, such as mood swings and morning sickness.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are usually found in cold water fishes, but figs are among the few fruits that contain high amounts of these substances. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for fetal development, and help decrease the risk for premature delivery, or preterm labor.
  • Pregnant women also suffer from skin pigmentation problems. Psoralens, which is a substance found in the flesh of the fruit, can help cure skin pigmentation ailments, including melasma.
