Can A Pregnant Women Eat Brinjal: Health Benefits Of Eggplant

Brinjal is otherwise known as the eggplant, and is one of the most affordable and easily available vegetables. Brinjal can be cooked in numerous ways. Like other vegetables, fresh eggplants contain a lot of essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Eggplants have high water, fiber, and potassium content.

Brinjal when consumed may bring numerous benefits. Eggplants may be used to tune the following problems:

  • Flatulence. Eggplants made into soup or mashed form can help get rid of gas in the stomach.
  • Congestion and phlegm formation. Roasted brinjal can help cure the excessive formation of mucus.
    Eggplant soup with some tomato may help improve appetite and facilitate better digestion.
  • Insomnia. Baked eggplant with some honey can help patients sleep easily.
  • Malaria. Baked eggplant with sugar on top can help cure enlargement of the spleen.

Eating Brinjal Or Eggplant During Pregnancy

Brinjal has been used in the treatment of diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. Although consumption of eggplants may bring numerous benefits, Ayurvedic traditions limit the use of brinjal in pregnant women. To foster optimal growth patterns, pregnant women should consume a proper dietary intake. In India, a number of traditions, taboos, and norms have pervaded beliefs in pregnancy. Brinjal is listed along the roster of foods to be avoided.

  • “The Way of Ayurvedic Herbs” discourages the inclusion of eggplants or brinjal in the diet of pregnant women. Eggplants are said to contain large amounts of phytohormones, and work as diuretics. Phytohormones are usually indicated for the treatment of amenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome. These can be used as a stimulant for menses when consumed daily.
  • Because of the menstruation-inducing properties, brinjal has been notoriously associated with miscarriage. However, pregnant women can still consume small amounts of eggplants.
  • Although these claims have been published in many Ayurveda books, eggplants are safe enough to eat in other cultures.
    In fact, no foods are contraindicated during pregnancy. Consumption of fruits and vegetables should even be increased during pregnancy to meet the daily requirements. No studies have been shown to prove that eating brinjal can bring harmful effects to both mother and fetus.
  • Brinjal has 6.4 mg of vitamin A, 6 mg of Iron, and 4.9 g of dietary fiber. All of these are essential nutrients needed during gestation. Pregnant women must consume moderate amounts, as these are not suitable for conditions related to excess bile humor and acidity problems.
